Frameless 10mm toughened shower screen in a renovated Melbourne period bathroom

5 Benefits of Frameless Shower Screens in Melbourne Homes

What renovators on forums actually care about: leaks on crooked walls, cleaning, light, hardware, and resale.

    1. Easier cleaning (the reason most people upgrade)

Framed screens collect soap and mould in every channel. Frameless glass is a flat pane plus hinges and a clamp. Forum threads about "black stuff in the shower frame" are almost always aluminium channels in a steamy room with no extractor. Wipe 10mm glass with a squeegee; you are not chiselling grout out of a frame.

    2. More light in small Melbourne bathrooms

Internal bathrooms in terraces and apartments (South Yarra, St Kilda, Richmond, Footscray workers' cottages) have one job: not feel like a box. Removing the frame and using clear 10mm glass is the cheapest visual upgrade after paint. Frosted panels still pass light; they just hide the toilet from the doorway.

    3. Custom fit on out-of-plumb walls

This is the number-one shower question on Australian renovation forums, and it is the number-one failure mode we see in Malvern, Hawthorn, Kew, Toorak, Carlton and other period stock. Walls that passed a 100-year-old build are not plumb. A kit screen leaves a wedge-shaped gap. People fill it with silicone. It leaks within months.

The professional fix is a template after tiles and waterproofing are complete, then glass cut with a taper so the edge follows the wall. Moderate lean: tapered edge. Larger deviation: engineered reveal, not a thicker silicone sausage. Do not measure from photos. Do not measure before tiling.

    4. Hardware that survives steam (and coastal air)

Cheap chrome pits. Steam plus salt air in Brighton, Elwood, Port Melbourne, St Kilda and Mornington eats low-grade fittings. We spec quality hinges and match finishes to tapware (chrome, matte black, brushed nickel) so you are not mixing warm brass taps with cold chrome hinges. Semi-frameless still has a channel; that channel is another corrosion line.

    5. Resale and inspection photos

Buyers in Toorak, Brighton, Balwyn and inner terraces read bathrooms in listing photos. A frameless screen photographs as a renovation; a framed kit photographs as a landlord special. It will not add a Toorak premium by itself, but it stops the bathroom being the reason a buyer discounts.

How we service suburbs from Footscray

Workshop: 1 McNab Avenue, Footscray VIC 3011. Measure, fabricate, install across a 50km radius.

    • Malvern, Hawthorn, Kew, Toorak, Carlton: assume out-of-plumb. Template only after tiles. See Malvern shower screens for local FAQs.
    • St Kilda, South Yarra, Docklands apartments: body-corporate access, lift bookings, 7-10 day express when the building allows. Like-for-like glass rarely needs OC; layout changes do.
    • Brighton, Elwood, Port Melbourne, Mornington: better hardware against salt-laden steam. Pair with the rest of a wet-area reno; do not install before waterproofing.
    • Footscray, Yarraville, Seddon, Maribyrnong: shortest lead. Cottage bathrooms are small; frameless plus a clear panel is usually the right call.

    Safety glass, not decorative glass

Shower screens are human-impact glazing. Grade A toughened (or laminated where specified), AS/NZS 2208 marked, minimum 6mm when unframed. We install 10mm frameless as standard so hinges are not hanging off toy-thickness glass. Details: safety information hub and Australian glass standards.
